Current ministry
Music ministry at Adamstown Uniting Church (Hunter Presbytery)
What you love about being involved in this ministry?
We have had lots of people come forward to join in with music at the church over the past 12 months. So many that we now need to start combining lots of different people into music groups so that everyone gets a turn at leading the music.
We have quite a few younger people joining our intergenerational band, which is my favourite part of the month (this band plays once a month in our services). We have band members from 10-75 years old and we make a great sound together.
A particularly exciting moment was when our organist who is our oldest musician, joined in with the band for a few songs last year. It felt like a truly intergenerational moment. No longer fighting between the old style and the new, but creating something that is ours and inclusive of all ages and members.
We also work really hard to only use songs that have inclusive language so that all members of our congregation can feel comfortable when singing along at church.
What you find most challenging?
Finding enough music with inclusive language! It’s hard to let go of some songs that we have sung for eternity that have some language that is difficult for some to sing. We are working hard to find new songs that we love to sing that allow all to feel welcome and relaxed in our services.
What you are looking forward to in your ministry in the year ahead?
I am looking forward to seeing more of our young musicians starting to play with different band leaders. To start with i have been the band leader when our younger musicians are playing, but it is my hope that as we are all getting to know each other so much better now, that the young ones will feel comfortable to play for other band leaders too.
Anything else you might want to share?
Our church has found that including our youth in music and tech within our services has allowed them to feel more ownership and connection at our church. It is so exciting because here we can see them learning, while also being present for services and becoming strong members of our community.
