Ever wondered how your unique gifts could be a blessing to others in mission and ministry? In our new series we feature the many faces across our Church who are serving where they are, with what God has given them. We hope that it will be a blessing and an inspiration.

Meet Janet Robertson

Current ministry

Volunteer Service Leader at The Wayside Chapels at Kings Cross and Bondi. Currently studying at Uniting Mission and Education (UME), for accreditation as a Lay Preacher.

Describe your journey with the church as a Volunteer Service Leader

I began going to Wayside Kings Cross in 2018 while studying at Sydney Missionary and Bible College (SMBC). I was encouraged by CEO and Pastor Jon Owen & outgoing minister Graham Long to step up to lead and "give the talk" as I like to describe it. Jon Owen then suggested I pursue a Period of Discernment (POD), and gave me an opportunity to practice leading and serving with the Bondi Congregation. I chose to remain in a voluntary role, as the POD gave me the luxury of time & space to actively consider my direction in faith and ministry.

What you love about being involved in this ministry?

Wayside is an open-hearted space where all are welcome regardless of their beliefs, & many voices are heard. It can feel messy at times and chaotic, yet still filled with the Spirit of wisdom.

Since opening up after Covid lockdowns, we have started to build a team of worship leaders from the congregation. This year a pastoral team was employed to further strengthen the gifts of both congregations.

What you find most challenging?

Roster planning! Preparing services and talks while balancing my full-time role as a carer.

What you are looking forward to in your ministry in the year ahead?

Completing my accreditation.

Trying to read as much as possible to avoid practicing a "thin theology", to quote Lisa Sharon Harper, author of The Very Good Gospel.

Anything else you might want to share?

I began to explore Christianity in 2009, but as a feminist and part of the LGBTQ+ community, I was not sure if I'd fit anywhere or ever be truly welcome. Whenever I am leading a service, I privately acknowledge that I am here thanks to the hard work of women in the Church who demanded their right to be heard.

I also acknowledge the consideration, prayer and hard work of the Uniting Church and the LGBTQ+ faith leaders who affirmed our right to be heard, respected, and loved as part of the church family.
