Meet Rev Garry Derkenne
Current Ministry
Retired Uniting Church Minister serving on Church Council as Resource Lead.
What do you love about being involved in this ministry?
Negotiating with all those who use our premises so that it meets their needs as well as working with Presbytery for a major refurb of the front of the church which has a local heritage order. The refurb is about to be completed and interacting with Presbytery, Synod, our Project Manager and Builder has been very smooth because of quick responses from all parties.
What do you find most challenging?
The challenge is the continual need for maintenance of a heritage building. We have adapted it to be user-friendly and with excellent sound, video, and broadcasts through streaming platforms. In this, we have been assisted with grants from Presbytery and Synod. However, the long-term maintenance is beyond the capacity of the current congregation on its own.
What are you looking forward to in your ministry in the year ahead?
I am looking forward to continuing to work with a great team to maintain and enhance our facilities. As part of the Church Council, I also look forward to continuing to enact our mission of Adamstown as a place to grow through faith, justice, and creativity. We are also celebrating this year the 150th anniversary of the Methodist/Uniting Church in Adamstown, and the Centenary of our current worship space – the Jubilee Memorial Church.
